Poem: Subtle Oppression

the media is talking
about a certain man
ending his life by
jumping onto
the rail

disruption
to the masses
curses arise
his story surfaces
about how he suffers

from a debt he can't afford
his household in peril
electricity and water
cut off
children quitting school

is there no other way,
is there no help?
who could he turn to
the loan sharks or
the government?

he is not alone
i suppose

with a barely surviving pay
no house to call a home
no husband to share the burdens
no significant amount in cpf
and many bills to pay

i don't qualify to rent
even a tiny flat from hdb
i earn 'too much' they stated
banks won't give me a loan
i earn 'too little' they claimed

stuck in a progressive society
that only help those
who help themselves
but would i still need help
if i could on my own?

i am not alone
i suppose

suddenly it seems
jumping off the platform
may well be
an option

Subtle oppression has no outlet. That's one reason for suicide. It's also one reason for depression, one reason wives leave their husbands even if they love them. Outright oppression is easy for your champions to recognize. But when there are half-reasons, half-truths, not quite equalities and subtle superiorities, the demon you're battling won't let anyone else see him. Only the one being oppressed. The oppressed is made to feel as though they are the problem. There's no way to battle that.
